Countdown   2012
to the
South Coast Area Show   &   National Show

Phil Champion

 1st. July

4 weeks to Havant 6 weeks to the National. This year these shows are only 2 weeks apart and it's a bit cramped in the greenhouse and the shade house. Have had a little move around, my 40 plants for Havant have all been moved to the left hand side (A) 60 plants are on the right hand side (B) for the National. Normally the south coast show is 4 weeks earlier than the National, that used to give me time to remove the 40 plants outside then had more space for the National plants. The buds selected for Havant are now just starting to show through the foliage (C) and it's now time to get to the side buds and remove them (D). I find It's easier to pull the bract back from behind the plant to be able to get to the side buds. With the side buds removed (E) all the energy of the plant is now focused on the flower.
Time also to look at buds for the National Tom Brownlee (F), Anniversary, Tequila Sunrise, Gypsy & Falstaff will be selected this weekend 1st July. Other than a couple of warm days and nights the weather has been quite kind this last week, ideal for Begonias. Next weeks forecast is cooler breezy and showery, I'm sorry to say I feel we will not be having a warm summer, but should be a bumper year for Begonias - no excuses for not getting a plant or flower on the show bench then is there?
I have 4 fans that are pushing air out of the shade house 2 at high level & 2 on the floor all blowing to the open end. Have had a small problem with green fly this year (G) but nothing too drastic, but will need to keep an eye out for mildew as well, even though I had sprayed 2 weeks earlier (H). This was on my single stem plant with 6 side shoots I'm afraid these plants are now going to be used for garden decoration only (I) plants had shown some damage to the foliage (J) by the spray but should not affect the blooms.
The greenhouse is also showing sign of the plants starting to need a little more elbow room another 80+ plants for the National. (K & L) My feeding programme has started, actually it really started at the start of the year, with a dusting of mycorrhizal transplanter (M) a fungus that attaches itself to the roots. I think I may have to leave this subject for another time as it could go on for some time trying to explain the products I have been using this last couple of years but if you want you can go to the companies web site and look at all there data it's called Symbio environmental biotechnology company. My only thing that concerns me now is a new addition to the family (N) he gets everywhere even in the pond.
